Antique Hand Woven Striped Indigo Cotton
This is an antique Japanese shima, or striped, cotton cloth from late Meiji era. It is hand spun and woven from botanical indigo dyed cotton and seems to have been taken from a futonji bed covering as evidenced by the small bits of cotton wadding that remain on the reverse.
The warp is two shades of indigo and straw colored yarns woven with a deep indigo weft forming a handsome stripe. It is a medium weight and created from three panels across. The lower left hand corner pieced from a very similar striped cotton—though, interestingly, each stripe seems to be just slightly wider.
In wonderful condition with excellent fabric integrity.
