Antique Korean Pojagi Created of Hand Woven Bast Fiber
This is an antique Korean patchwork pojagi or wrapping cloth. Patchwork pojagi are also referred to as chogak po. These special wrapping cloths were oftentimes used wrap, store, and carry objects, and also as a meaningful way to present a gift.
Entirely handcrafted from hand-loomed and pieced bast fiber, very likely ramie or hemp. The wonderful texture of bast fibers here have softened considerably with use over time resulting in a pleasing natural hand and drape because of this, similar to well washed linen.
This is one of larger pojagi that we have come across and measures about 44" square. It is a great piece of history and you can tell it was well loved—there is light patina over the entire piece. There are just a few small holes as is common with items of this age though we don't feel they detract from the piece. The sewing and seams are done quite well and the integrity is strong.
