Charming Brown Furoshiki, or Gift Wrapping Cloth
This is a charming brown furoshiki, or cloth used for wrapping and presenting gifts.
This simple brown cotton fabric has a bold peony motif which has been dyed using katazome, a stencil resist dying technique. We believe that this cloth was once part of a noren, a Japanese shop curtain, or possibly azabuton, a sitting cushion. In its current state it appears to function as a furoshiki, which is a cloth traditionally used to wrap gifts. A charming mid century Japanese item.
