A Vintage Length of Japanese Shibori: Tortoiseshell and Spiderweb
A length of lightweight shibori cotton dyed into a tortoise shell pattern using a kumo technique. Fabric is pinched into peaks and wrapped tightly with threads then dyed. When the threads are removed a sort of spiderweb, or kumo, pattern emerges.
A brilliant synthetic indigo was used on machine loomed cotton for yukata, casual summer kimono, from which this piece was salvaged. An gorgeous example of shibori.
