Large Blue and White Porcelain Dish
This is a large Japanese imari ware plate.
This plate was most likely created using a technique called katagami-zuri. In this method, the potter prepares a sheet of paper from which some figures and patterns are cut out. It is then placed on the unglazed clay body and painted over. The stencil is then removed, the glaze applied, and the plate is fired. The pigment painted through the perforations produces the intended design in underglaze blue. This technique was adopted for economy of time and helped the potter to produce many pieces in exactly the same design.
