Shonai Quilted Noragi - Thousands of Careful Stitches on Indigo
This is a sashiko noragi, or quilted coat, from Shonai, Yamagata prefecture of Japan.
This jacket's entire surface is dyed with a deep natural indigo and is densely sashiko stitched. The stitches themselves create a textured pattern on the fabric surface. Thousands of single stitches or hitomezashi are woven in a step and weave formation.
With the passing of time, the sashiko pattern would gradually emerge, for the thread color fades faster than that of the cloth. This example, however, has been scarcely worn, possibly kept in storage for safe keeping.
There is a handsome striped collar which is traditional of jackets from this region.
In excellent condition and for those interested, it is very wearable.
Dimensions: sleeve to sleeve 35in (89cm); collar to hem 34in (86cm); chest 23.5in (59cm)
