Red Silk Shibori and Itajime Han-Juban
This is an antique han-juban, or under-kimono, made of delicate plain silk which has been dyed a vibrant red.
The fabric that comprises top half of the front of the garment and the proper entire reverse has an auspicious nami-chidori (wave and plover) pattern which is dyed using a shibori technique.
The floral pattern on the front of the vest is achieved through ita-jime shibori which is a board clamp technique. Essentially the textile is sandwiched between two wooden boards and then dye is poured through. This is a very old technique which has been practiced in Japan since the Nara period.
In excellent condition without any tears or stains.
