Antique Japanese Boro Noragi—Patched and Mended Work Jacket
This is an exceptional Japanese boro noragi, or work jacket, with a bold and graphic variety of patchwork cotton.
The outside of this jacket is composed of dozens of various hand loomed indigo dyed kasuri cloth fragments that have been sashiko stitched together with both undyed and indigo dyed threads.
The reverse of the jacket shows perhaps more symmetry in terms of an overall pattern, but the varied assortment of kasuri cottons on the front is what we feel really gives this jacket its visual charm.
It is equally superb, but distinctly different, when turned inside out. A patchwork of soft, faded cottons is created and reinforced with hundreds of contrasting sashiko stitches in an irregular grid pattern. The mending and piecing here is intense and geometric.
With a wonderful atmosphere and solid construction, this noragi has many desirable traits that a collector of Japanese boro textile may look for.
